Local Fifth Grader Invents Dog Collar Designed for Extra Fluffy Pets
Chesterland, Ohio — Mabel Davis, an 11-year-old fifth grader at West Geauga Lindsey Elementary School, has created an innovative new dog collar made especially for extra fluffy dogs. The idea came from a simple problem many pet owners face: thick fur can make it difficult to find the collar and clip on a leash quickly.
Mabel’s design features a unique attachment that extends beyond long or dense fur, allowing owners to easily locate the collar and latch a leash without digging through layers of fluff. The collar is comfortable for dogs while making walks and outings less frustrating for their families.
“I hope this collar helps other dog owners like me,” Mabel said. “Fluffy dogs are cute, but their fur can hide the collar. My collar is called the EZ-Grab because it is easy to find the D-ring. When my golden retriever was a fluffy puppy, it was hard for me to find the D-ring, and she would start biting at me with her sharp puppy teeth thinking that I was trying to play with her. It was very frustrating. I asked my mom to buy me a collar where the D-ring sticks out, and we found that this product does not exist, so we worked together as a family to invent it!” The EZ-Grab Collar is now patent-pending.
The collar is now available for purchase online, and early feedback from pet owners has been enthusiastic. Families with breeds such as huskies, shepherds, and other long-haired dogs will find the product saves time and reduces frustration.
Mabel hopes her invention will inspire other kids to notice everyday problems and come up with creative solutions. “You don’t have to be an adult to invent something,” she said.
